This week has been getting off to a great start. The two groups that competed last night in our Camp Discovery Olympics were the Hawks and the Mustangs. The Hawks came out victoriously and are enjoying their meals first today. We’ve spent some time fishing, at the pool and all over camp. Currently, outdoor recreation is practicing ultimate frisbee on the field in the middle of camp and the other group is working on art projects in the pavilion next to the dining hall. There is a surprise tonight from the local volunteer fire department, Flynn’s Lick.

It has been a phenomenal week. We closed out the week with a bunch of excellent talent at Wednesday’s night talent show including a comedian, dancers, singers and skits. Last night we spent the time dancing the night away to all of this summer’s hot jams and yesterday’s hits. The campers are currently being picked up as these pictures are put on the blog. We’re going to miss all of the campers and hope they return next summer! There are still five more weeks of camp with all kinds of wonderful campers to look forward to.

This week we’ve had a wonderful group of campers ready to spend some time at Camp Discovery. We’ve spent time night fishing, swimming in our pool, making all kinds of arts and crafts, outdoor recreation as well as our own Camp Discovery Olympics last night. The campers and counselors are divided into two groups– the Water Benders and the Air Benders. Last night the Water Benders prevaled at the Camp Discovery Olympics and took the rights to first meals today. We’re looking forward to the talent show. Campers are practicing and perfecting their performances for tonight. Visitors are welcome every Wednesday night at 7pm for the talent show!

This 2010 summer season at Camp Discovery is officially underway today. The first week of campers are arriving as I type this. We’re prepared for another summer of fun, sun, water, delicious camp food, and all the goodness that camp can handle. We’ve spent two weekends underway here with orientation for our staff learning all about camp and getting everything ready for the season. I know I’m excited, and if you were wondering I’m the guy with the red beard and the jeans on the left– Daniel, camp’s assistant director for three years now. It’s gonna be awesome, but it tends to be awesome because of the campers that come here year after year.

On Monday night, three fire trucks came from Flynn’s Lick Volunteer Fire Department as well as South Side. They set up all three of their trucks to draft water from the Cordell Hull Lake so we could all have a great time. Much thanks goes out to all of the firefighters that helped make this happen!
Our campers decided upon the team names the Green Machine, Giggle, the Martians, and the Transformers. Last night there was competition on the main green for the Camp Discovery Olympics. Everyone was a winner, but the Green Machine came out on top.

Last night we played bingo and currently the campers are at outdoor recreation and the swimming pool. The teams have not yet been named yet, so stay tuned.
Cheetah Power: Oatmeal

We’ve returned from a short two-week hiatus to return to your regularly schedule Camp Discovery programming. We’ve had a lot of energy this week in the four groups: Soulja Boy/Girl, Red Goats, Cheetahs, and the Pizza Falcons. The rain hasn’t stopped a moment of camp yet. The Cheetahs were victorious during the Special Olympics this year, earning their spot to eat oatmeal first this morning, circle pizza first at lunch and the delicious meal we’ll be having for our dinner tonight. The kitchen staff at Camp Discovery are top notch at making not only delicious foods, but catering to a variety of specialized diets for specific campers.
During our talent show, the group Soulja Boy/Girl trumped the competition with a title track named after their team.
This week a very special guest, Mr. Michael Mignogna, came to inspire our campers with his program Look Ma! No Feet. His program was based around finding what really inspires you and using it to help inspire others. The campers and staff really loved creating rhythms together and playing on his drums. “He is a true inspiration!” said a camper.
