Cheetah Power: Oatmeal
Posted by Director
We’ve returned from a short two-week hiatus to return to your regularly schedule Camp Discovery programming. We’ve had a lot of energy this week in the four groups: Soulja Boy/Girl, Red Goats, Cheetahs, and the Pizza Falcons. The rain hasn’t stopped a moment of camp yet. The Cheetahs were victorious during the Special Olympics this year, earning their spot to eat oatmeal first this morning, circle pizza first at lunch and the delicious meal we’ll be having for our dinner tonight. The kitchen staff at Camp Discovery are top notch at making not only delicious foods, but catering to a variety of specialized diets for specific campers.
During our talent show, the group Soulja Boy/Girl trumped the competition with a title track named after their team.
This week a very special guest, Mr. Michael Mignogna, came to inspire our campers with his program Look Ma! No Feet. His program was based around finding what really inspires you and using it to help inspire others. The campers and staff really loved creating rhythms together and playing on his drums. “He is a true inspiration!” said a camper.

This week the campers decided upon two group names: the Tigers and the Blue Frogs. The Tigers were victorious at the Camp Discovery Special Olympics, but the Blue Frogs returned to win the talent show with “Joy to the World” where Jeremiah was a bullfrog. We’ve had an amazing first week. We have a big dance tonight that we’re totally excited about. The staff looks forward to what the rest of this week and next week will bring!

For our second week of Camp Discovery this summer, we’ve been having a ton of fun. This week there have been four teams and they chose the names Silver Dragons, Monkeys, Purple Cats, and Giants.
The boys over at the Flynn’s Lick Volunteer Fire Department came to visit us on Monday evening. With the help of our director, they sprayed water over the campus for some fun in the sun.
The Special Olympics were dominated by the Purple Cats while last night the Giants took the talent show by storm. We will we be taking two weeks off and return on the 28th of June for another great week.

The 2009 Summer Staff is ready for a whole new summer with tons of amazing campers. We look forward to seeing all of the new and returning campers this summer. There are six weeks of Camp Discovery this summer.
We’ve started our first week of camp off with a bang! We welcome our new campers! There are many returning campers and staff. It seems to be a great time for everyone. There has already been some music time, hopscotch, wiffleball, art time, fishing, pool time, and all around good times!

So for our final week we’ve been up the same old fun that we tend to have. This week’s teams are the ever feuding items of Fire and Ice. Last night was our Tuesday Night Tournament in which our Ice team froze the competition. This week we have been visited by the Flynn’s Lick Fire department and two bunnies that left as quickly as they came. Rabbits these days just can’t take 97 degree weather in the heat anymore.

This week has been a great time here at camp. It has been a very hot week! We’ve been chilling out at the pool and playing games outside in the mornings. In the afternoons, we have been cooling off indoors for our music and art classes. We had a really fun time at last night’s talent show involving lots of instruments, music, dancing, and gymnastic moves.

Awesome Eagle, the mascot from Tennessee Tech college, came to visit us and give us some expert eagle advice on fishing. We ended up catching some types of fish that we haven’t caught all summer including catfish, drum, and bass. After he flew off, there was some great dodgeball action going on with all of our campers and they loved it.
Our campers were divided into two tribes this week: The Apache and Shawnee. They competed in a Tuesday Night Tournament (TNT) in which the Shawnee tribe prevailed as the winners of the festivities that night. The next night, the tribes battled in musical form during our talent show and the Apache, with their colorful guitars, won the event that night. Everyone got together at our last night to dance the night away, hit the pinata and eat candy apples prepared by our director, Dr. Dawn Hickman.

Our kids week kicked off strong with a pool party the first night with almost everyone in the pool. We’ve been enjoying the high-energy entertainment of the children and we’ve all been having a blast. The Jackson County central fire department came out on Monday night after our carnival to show the campers their gear and then hook up to the hydrant and spray water over 100 ft all over everyone. It was quite intense.
Thanks goes out to the Jackson County central fire department!
A visit from Awesome Eagle, the Tennessee Tech University mascot, will be shown soon via pictures and more to conclude our kid week on Friday. We look forward to having a whole lot more fun before the week is up.

Leftovers are never served for any meal at Camp Discovery, but some of these pictures just had to make the blog. We finished up the week with a talent show jam-packed with talent. There has been basketball dribbling, lots of singing and dancing, snapping, a wheelchair race, and more at our talent shows.
We are just now starting our Kid Week 2008 with campers between the ages of 8 and 18. We’ll keep you updated very soon with some visual confirmation of the events. Until then.
